Making Of: CHILDERN????
02/26/2021
Oof, I feel like I'm always making "Making Of" post about me making models, but I really like doing these post so "OH WELL"! Anyway, a few days ago I got my hands on a really cute toddler/baby base model, I remember back in the old MMD days there were some baby/toddler bases but now there no where to be found on DA, I chalk that up to do either the account that used to host those downloads were deactivated or maybe too many weirdoes did too many weirdo things idk, there are still like child bases the one made by Kiskisbellas seem to be pretty popular but there haven't been ANY cute baby/toddler bases until a few days ago, I was scrolling through Insta because that's what you do as a young 20-something, seeing that other peeps were up to both art-wise and life wise. One of the people I follow named Cosmo made a story about how to make baby/toddler bases because they recently been showing off some really cute baby OCs recently, I tried to follow the tutorial but it kind of got a little Oof on my end when it came to down sizing the arms (DARN U CHILD BASE ARMS!!!), so instead of making myself go insane, I decided to just ask Cosmo for help (for once). I DM'd them and they responded pretty quickly, and I suggested to them that maybe it would be cool to put the base up for download (for those of us who are having a hard time following the story tutorial). Cosmo really seemed to like the idea, so they give me a link to the base download, and later that day the base was up for DM download.
So, when I got the base I was SO psyched, I've been meaning to make some kid clothes too for the MMD community, but not just for Kiskisbellas' kid base but for Cosmo baby/toddler base as well. I did make a separate edit of Cosmo toddler base just to make it a bit taller but not as tall as Kiskisballs' kid base...
Even though I made my own size edit think I'm just gonna make some models with Cosmo's base and Kiskisbella's base , I may use the base edit I made for something else (idk..only time will tell...oof). I think I'm going make a toddler OC model and kid OC model (well...duh), I was thinking they could be like the younger siblings of Manny and Quinn, I have no clever name ideas for the two young siblings at the time of writing this sentence, I'm pretty sure once I get into the flow of making the models I'll probably get an idea. While I did just get the toddler base, I'm going to start with the child base that one's gonna be a bit quicker, since with toddler base I plan to make one of those Japanese kindergarten smocks , and think with the future clothes for the toddler base, I'll be taking a lot of inspiration from various esty shops that specialize in making clothes for Nendoroid (since those dolls have a kind of similar base to Cosmo's base)....
I might also do a speed model with a daniel voice over (just to make it interesting ) but that's only if I remember to press the record button before starting the modeling. Anyways, for the child base I had to face edit in mind....
This chibi head edit by Dolore Allo Zucchero
or this TDA face edit by Coryushka
What I like about the first base is the eye lashes, but also like the lashes of the second base and I REALLY like the mischievous /cat mouth of the second base, for the clothes instead of making the clothes from scratch (at least for the first fit) I'll make more clothes from scratch later but just for right now, I'm super okay with just editing someone else clothes for right now. I was thinking about going with simple overall and a cute top..
Overalls by Reseliee
either with one of those tops by Reseliee
this cute collared top by Tehrainbowllama
and prolly using these converse that I really like by Nagai-Mor0
I might add some accessories like bandages and (even though I just said earlier I wasn't going to make a custom item for this model, I changed my mind), and a Kuromi inspired beanie...
Bandages by Azyazya
Okay, now that that's out of the way onto the actual model-making! I started with replacing the original face with the face edit made by Coryshuka, it admittedly looking a little weird but I think its nothing a little texture edit can't fix...
The second face edit fitted the base WAAAY better but it was mentioned in the post that this face edit was made specifically to fit this base, so I guess it makes sense, the first face edit look lots better once I made the texture edit (which was just me taking the texture from Quinn's model...oof)
then I put the texture edit on the second base, and it still looked cute, but I think I'm going to go with the first base just cuz I really like the mouth on that one, I'll use this base for a Quinn's child model...
I edited the textures for the eyebrows and the lashes because they looked really pale, and I kind of lowered the eye and made them a little wider, and thicken and lengthen the eyebrows, doing this (of course) means that I don't GOOF'ED up the morphs, so I had to go back a fix up the morphs a bit..
(I also used the same eye texture for the Manny model, I wanted to make a whole new one but then realized I could get away with it because they're related, YEET!)
(Standard morph check, everything looks lit)
(added Monocereal's Expression for extra spice!)
I made some minor edits to the nose to make it look more round, and I edited the face texture one more time so the nose shadow doesn't look like a weird mustache..
I downloaded some hair packs from Mianbaga-MMD, since this is a child model I wanted her to have a youthful look, so I thought pigtails or at least a side ponytail would work as a cute hairstyle...
I forgot to screenshot the other hairstyles but I ended up settling on these two
You know I was going to go with the cute calluored top, but when I edited it to a pink color it looked WEIRD, so instead I went with the basic sweaters made by RaC, and made some minor adjustments by shortening the sleeves and adding rainbow texture....
I had to heavily edit Resilee's Sailor Overalls because I didn't realize that the shirt and the overall themselves were on the same layer, so I had to go bit by bit and remove the faces of the shirt until I got a (kind of ) clean edit of just the overalls....
I fitted the overalls, which weren't that hard to re-fit onto the model, and added some pins made Allyirenejean, I was going to add some patches to the overall texture but its sooo small that the patches came out blurry and weird when I loaded it back into PMX...
So, uh a thing happened when I loaded the model the next day...
SO IT LOOKS LIKE I"M GONNA HAVE TO START OVER (kind of).....
Okay, so it only took 30 mins but I was able to basically recreate the previous version of the model, and even fix the weird rigging with the overalls by using the TW rig plugin thing, so we gucci now....
Phew that was close one! anyways, I continue to add more bandages and edited the textures with some patterns I had in photoshop....
I also edited the face to add some kidcore-like face paint and it came out pretty good...
Next was the shoes, I wanted to add some socks to this model as well, so I downloaded some from 9844 on DA, and the shoes I downloaded from Pixicat and edited the texture to have a rainbow look....
Just for some extra bits, I added a Purin Backpack I got from Unluckycandyfox (I used this backpack for another model I just like how the way it looks, it really fits with the kidcore look of the fit). and Mijumarunr1's Strawberry bows (again adding some new texture using the patterns in my photoshop)...
And she's DONE!
At least for now, I think I might go back later and add some bracelets, but this is good for now....
ON TO THE SECOND SON!
The texturing of the youngest was pretty much the same for the second youngest, I used StrawberryDemons' Sweet Bangs Edit, and used FrenchFriesTsun's hair for the back the head. I decided to do the outfit part in blender myself since I can't find any kindergarten smocks that would fit this base (ironically), making the outfit myself takes a LOT LESS time than scouring DA andNicoNico for the right fit, I may start doing this more often with my models...
I wasn't going to make the shoes myself because I thought I couldn't make shoes, but then I got a flashback of me making my bliss mascot (that has shoes) and making my low-ploy 'sona (that also has shoes), and realized "Oh yeah so I DO know how to make shoes....
It took me about 3 or 4 hours for me to finish this outfit completely.....
Soo, after the outfit I decided to give this little a plushie to hold, I decided on a sea bunny plush cuz its cute and easy to model! I did my usual blender to pmx thing, but this time I actually attempted to rig a model....
I quickly whipped up this "render" I guess you could call it to see how the sea bunny plush looks with the kid model and...
AYE, that's pretty good, the plushie matches with Nat's character (oh btw I decided to call the youngest Nat, and the second youngest Mari, get it heh), so yeah I'm basically done with both models, that took quicker than I expected--I honestly thought it would take another day but it didn't...oh well
Anyways, I'm still pretty proud of how these models came out I think I'm actually getting better at making these things oof, welp, I gotta finish making them ice cream models--I'm like THIS CLOSE TO BEING DONE, then I can finally move on to another big project oof.
