Wayback Web: My Comic Fury Account, lol!
10/21/2023
So, I was clearing out some tabs cluttering my browser, and I across a tab for comic fury. I've been meaning to actually start making comics for like FOR-EVA-ER! But while looking at the Comic Fury tab, I was SLAPPED with the past! I say that like this tab hasn't been sitting in my browser for like EVER, but everytime I look at it, I get FLASHBACKS...
Flashbacks back to the days where I was really gung-oh about being a webcomic artist, madly (and desperately) posting my comics to any site where I thought I had a chance of getting noticed. This was back when before I realized that popularity doesn't equal good art skills (the foolish child!), this was also back when Tapas and Webtoon were really poppin' in the webcomic scene.
I had two--well NO, THREE comics I was making at the time, Cupcakes and Clubs, The Reverie, and NostoNeo. I only posted NostoNeo to Tapas and I posted Cupcakes and Club and The Reverie to both Tapas and Comic Fury. I remember not liking how Tapas forced all comics to be in infinite scroll format, so I went to Comic Fury to have my comics in that classic webcomic format.
I remember fiddling around with customization with my limited knowledge of css and html, I took a class for it in 11th grade, but I was in that weird mode I go in when I'm learning something new where I feel like I can't learn something new so I only end up retaining bits and pieces of info. So, my webcomic page ended up looking pretty mid to put it nicely, like MEGA OOF, man!
Cut to 6 years later...
I have better coding skills and I still have 3 webcomics ideas I would like to develop, this time around are Sketch Dump, Queen To Bee, and Chara Bites. I still have no plans to host my comics on Tapas or Webtoons because I don't feel like any of my comics would fit on there since the front page is steamy romances for days, and I'm only skilled in writing slow burn fluff which only makes a minor appearance in all of my new webcomics, oof.
I'm gonna host the comics on here, my neocities, and Comic-Fury, since again my code skills have advanced (at least enough to where I can up keep a comic) and I have my own site now so I don't have to worry about Tapas yeeting my stuff if it actually gets any attention. I'm no longer under the mindset of popular comic = good art, more of comic-making= progress-making, yeah.
I wanna clear out my Comic Fury account of my old comics, but before I do that I want take a trip down memory lane (even if it is going a short one) and see how much I've grow in both art and coding skills.
So, let's quit screwin' around and start!
Alright, so here's my Comic Fury account, the two comics I have on here are The Reverie and Cupcakes and Clubs. I'll be starting with Cupcakes and Clubs since that's the oldest one of the two, in terms of how long I've had this idea.
Let's take a look at the description...
"Summer Bridges has move to Lakeview.
She now goes to Lakeview High, Where students must join a club or face a study hall with nothing to do but extra credit work. Summer finds a club to join, but they now need to makeover their club room, but their club funds have vanish mysteriously, also Summer decides to just be friends with her crush Josh Smith, she soon notices him spending alot of time with a member of the rival Cupcake Club. If you like comedy, teenage romance, and human remains in closets then this is the comic for you."
Not too bad of the description, although in the description I didn't really explain how the sub plot effects the main plot, but its better than nothing. I remember I came up with this story when I couldn't find any clubs to join in middle school. I really liked the idea of the clubs at the school, kind of storta running the school or at least helping to run the school, like in my comic the culinary club helps with coming up with school lunches, or the AV helps fixes technical stuff around the school (usually with the tvs and junk), or the book club helping to pick out books for the library and watching the library while the librarian is out doing other errands. Basically the school having its own ecosystem, like a mini town or city.
I would love to come back to this plot line someday (maybe pretty soon-day) but for right now my mind is somewhere away from this idea.
Okay, so we got the plot line, lets look at the comic's website...oof this is gonna hurt....
Yeah just like I thought...
OOOOOOOF!
Tbh the lack of skill in coding matched my lack of skill in comic making, but still is kind of just ooof, man. What you're seeing in the screenshot is the last comic page I've ever uploaded to the site. I find it hilarious that it ends on a cliffhanger, and I didn't even introduce anything, it just ends there. So, if there was anyone ACTUALLY interested in my story then I already lost them like 3 or 4 pages in.
Before I get to the comic itself, I want to check out the blog posts I made for this comic because the vibe shift in those blog post is tonal whiplash.
(The bottom post is suppose to be read before the top one for comedic effect.)
Oh, BOI! I only made two post on this blog and it was like "Hiiiiii!" then "uh...think imma head out now..peace (*fades away while peacing out, lol*). The two different energies is pure comedy gold. What makes it funnier is that according to my Comic Fury page, the top post was posted in 2020 while the bottom was posted 2017 (when I first started the comic). 2020 me sounded so arrogant and confident in her art skills, but I assure you that it wasn't until recently when I started to make big moves in my art. I'm pretty sure I had restarted the comic in 2020 not much would change art style wise, but the coding on the site would been more presentable.
Speaking of the comic, lets do a play by play or a page by page (if that makes any sense, lol)...
The cover page of comic perfectly showcases my lack in understanding form, it was something that I really struggled with for a really long time (and still do). Although, I understood the form of the photo frame, and the cupcake ( kind of). I failed to understand the form of the phone, it looks super flat almost like paper. The design of the phone case is a mess too, like this is a phone case that suppose to be so well designed that someone would pay for it.
The plot of the first comic of cupcakes and clubs involves Summer and her friends selling phones cases after noticing one of the club members really has a knack for design. The cupcake represents the rival club the cupcake club, they don't really do anything helpful as club, they just throw cupcake parties and gossip. The club leader of the cupcake club, Peyton, her father gives the school a bunch of money for funds and stuff, so she can basically do whatever she wants at the school as long it doesn't end up making her family look bad.
The photo is a picture of two characters, Josh and Riley (I could never spell her name right, I put that on the dyslexia, boi!), this pic was taken when they first met at a summer day camp. The two have been best friends ever since, well, up until Riley decided to join the cupcake club because one of the perks of being a club member is getting a full scholarship to any school of choice. The cupcake club is very selective when it comes to picking their members, the reason why Riley got in is because Peyton has a huge crush on Josh. Josh is kind of aware of this and tries to steer clear of the cupcake club, and only goes there every once in a while to talk Riley.
The thing about Riley being in the cupcake club is that it changes her personality , outside of the club is very mischievous, gung-oh and adventurous but when she's in the club, she acts as Peyton's assistant, which makes her act very shy and soft-spoken. Riley has to walk on egg shell around Peyton since she doesn't want to loose her chances at getting the scholarship, Peyton knows that and kind of gets a kick out of being able to make Riley to whatever she wants. Its also kind of a slight at Riley for being able to talk with Josh so easily, and be able to be so close to him.
Josh and Riley's relationship has been impacted by Riley joining the cupcake club since Josh really doesn't like to see Riley in assistant mode since that's not the person he met back at day camp. Riley is only able to be herself again on school breaks and the weekend since Peyton's family usually has her routine booked up on those days.
In the story Summer misreads Riley and Josh's relationship as being romantic, which really stirs Summer to believe that Riley was the one who stole the club funds, when it was actually Peyton who did it.
Oof, I didn't mean to info dump the plot of the first comic, but there it is..lol.
On the picture itself, I still liked how I did the water, even tho I'm pretty sure I can render water better than that if I do a study on it. The pose between the two should be more cozy like Josh and Riley should be hugging in this pic almost. I think that what I original intended the picture to be, but I wasn't smart enough at the time to look up a picture of two kids hugging, lol.
The grass is a bit too reflective it looks like plastic instead of natural grass, there needs to be more tree to give off that forest-y vibe. The tress look too Christmas-y for a summer camp too.
The sun...I still draw/render my suns like this! Although, again, I'm pretty sure I can do better than that tho. I really need to study up, oof!
Riley's hand is not that bad, although, I could have made the wrist thinner, I like how I placed the cupcake in-between the phone case and its places closer to Riley than Josh. It kind of shows the rift in between the two clubs in a way.
The cupcake itself looks like π© , and honestly it looks better without the chocolate/ π© coating. Now thinking about it, I don't know if I was looking at ref for the cupcake or have a cupcake in mind that actually exist that looks like this.
Alot of my art problems not only comes from the fact that I didn't understand form, but also from the fact I didn't really used references. I didn't have or use pure ref back then, where I could look at the ref photo while drawing.
The font choice could be better too, idk what the heck font this is but its not title font material, its still cute tho. In terms of what I think title font is, I like my title font to be thick and bubble-like, I feel like thinner font should can be used for sub-titles to contrast against the thicker bigger main title.
This page showcase a problem that I still have with comic making, PANELING! I've always thought I had an understanding of paneling, like when I look at other people's comic pages and see what other peeps do with their paneling, and I'm like "Ohh, I get why they did that" and shake my head like I get it, but if you were to ask me to do the same thing, I would be like "uhhhhhh....wot!".
So, I have a problem with having panels that look like they're floating about (when they're not suppose to be), and leaving alot of negative space (when I don't intend to). I think I just need to look up videos and articles on different panel shapes and their usage in storytelling. Like I know wide panels are used to scenery shots, and narrow panels are used for shots where characters are peeking to look at something or to focus on one item or subject in a panel, but again if you asked me to show you whatt I mean I'mma be like...
The background for the first panel is pretty bad, like the perspective is off-off-off-(Broadway). I think I was aiming for 2-point perspective, I am proud that I didn't do the default placement of placing the main character in the back of the class near the window. I was really lazy with corkboard in the back, I mean, I didn't even properly decorate the post so it just looks like a gradient. I prolly' planned to put something there, I either just forgor π or got bored (that's prolly' true because it rhymes).
The npc students do not have any legs (no legs), again this falls into the perspective problem because I didn't know how to draw legs from a 2-point perspective.
The window don't have a trim around the glass but the trim in the middle of the glass is extra thicc! again, I wasn't looking at any references. Now, looking back at it I should have prolly been looking at refs if I was going to do something in 2 point perspective. I don't think I was even humble enough to use the perspective tool.
I keeping mentioning about not using a reference but I DID use a reference for the calculator, that reference being the calculator I used in high school. I think I even counted the buttons as janky as they look.
The second panel is suppose to show how much Summer is crushing on Josh, its a bit overboard but that's kind of the joke...
For some reason, on the comic site the next page is insanely huge! I don't remember what I did (or didn't do) for the page to turn out THIS BIG, but here it is...
To get a proper look at the page I had to open it in a new tab, so now we have a better look at it...
The paneling in this is a bit better, better in terms of there's not that much empty floaty space in between panels. The panels themsleves are oddly shaped but Idk if I mean to do that on purpose. The perspective is still off- off-off-(Broadway) tho.
The npcs here finally have legs, but in the second panel they disappear completely (both the legs and the npcs themsleves). I used a weird warp effect the "blah blah" text, it was unnecessary. The faces have no form to them even I still use the (I_I) face expression.
The panel with the doodle page, the doodle itself is alright. I think did look at ref for the pose, I don't why but I just really wanted this to be colored, even tho its a doodle its not supposed to be a colored that's the whole point. This was my attempt to draw in a generic anime style, which I guess is not that bad but still no form.
The kanji there is a the kanji for Sempai because lol SIMP! basically that was the joke!
The hands on this page still look good. Although, the arm in the 3rd panel the arm looks like it belong to a teacher that's standing instead of a student sitting next to Summer. The hands holding the paper are super wonky the thumbs don't even align. Oddly enough, the notebook paper is outlined very boldly. I should have shaded the lines of where the paper is folded instead of using just thin lines with no shading.
On this page, again the FORM is nonexistent, I didn't understand facial proportions or any proportions for that matter. That type of thing falls into the understanding form category. The pose that Summer is hold is SUPER stiff, the npc students in the background have made a reappearance this time with their legs.
The panels are still wonky as ever, the last panel is leaning a bit to floating territory.
Same beat with this page, lack of form, perspective is WOT!, and the panel is still oddly spaced. I would talk about the writing but this screenshot you can barely see the text and this is the ONLY spoken dialogue in this comic.
According to my archive page for this comic, I started this comic in late Jan and ended in mid Feb. It looks like I posted the pages in burst, which I felt like was a red flag for me that I was not going to finish the comic.
When I start making comics again, I'm going to try to keep to routine but if I fail to that once, I'm just going to get back up and try again. What I do have to lose in doing so? nothing, so there is no reason for me to trip out about it.
Okay, I'm done with Cupcakes and Clubs, onwards to The Reverie...
The layout of this page is basically the same as Cupcakes and Clubs, the only thing I would like to point out is that I could have made the logo a transparent png, since the color scheme for the logo and background are basically the same. The stars in the logo are not needed.
This blog entries are more optimistic than the one from Cupcakes and Clubs. Funny how I didn't make a intro blog post for Cupcakes and Clubs, but I did for The Reverie. I could only guess its because I thought that The Reverie was gonna be my pet project, even tho Cupcake and Clubs were more along the lines of pet project status because I had that WAYYY LONGER.
There's a bunch of typos in these post as a result of mix of dyslexia and excitement. I started up both CC and Reverie at the same time, I didn't know why I thought I had the chops to upkeep two comics at the same DARN TIME because I didn't, lol!
Let's take a look at the meet the author page!
Oh BOI....
Oof, the code on this page is OOF, the font is super tiny and double space, which makes look even more tiny. I'mma need a magnifying glass just to sus this stuff out, man! I don't know what younger me was thinking.
How could anyone look at this and be like "BET!" or even "F@#$ it, we ball!
My pfp is weirdly aligned to the left at the bottom, usually with pfp I like to put them at the top center of the page, or at least center bottom of the page. SOMEWHERE CENTER ON THE PAGE!!
My pfp is...y'know since I've already went over the art problems I had with my previous comic, and since CC was made around the same time this comic was it would be annoying for me to go over the same points again. So for this round I'm going to focus on the writing, since this comic has waayy more dialogue than CC.
With that being said, lets take a look at the excerpt I've written about myself...
Hello! I'm Cinderpeach, the ceator of The Reverie. I've always wanted to do a story
about fanatasy, The character of Sanya is one a kind of based off myself, it little
bit. I've also always wanted to have my own comic website/series. It may be a
rocky start at first, but know soon I'll get the handle of it. The inspiration for the story
are the concept of lucid dreams, Caroline, Alice in Wonderland, some shorts on the internet,
and my own dreams.
Okay, lets get this out of the way first, I spelled 'Creator' and 'Fantasy' wrong but I was here just to list off all of the spelling errors in a thing I made, we be here all day. The story of Reverie is not just about Fantasy. It was kind of a love letter to Lucid Dreaming, since that concept was living rent free in mind at the time. I really really wanted to learn how lucid dream to the point where it almost became an obsessions (like in a bad way), so I had to stop thinking about it.
A little while later, I learned about the concept of immersive daydreaming to me was something I already did that was kind of like Lucid Dreaming, so to me that was a fair trade.
In a (VERY) weird way, this comic was a way for me to experience lucid dreaming without lucid dreaming, which I think is why this comic idea fell through because I didn't really have a story, it was just me exploring lucid dreaming. I mention in the author page that Sanya is a little like me, but looking back at it NO she was me FR.
As I've gotten older, I have less and less of tendency to make the main character basically me (if its not a self insert character, but even then If I keep using the S/I they eventually become a character separate from myself, which I think is how God intended.)
I was going to go through this comic page by page, but I think I'm just gonna showcase one page, and I think this one page really showcases the writing problems in comic as a whole.
Yes, oof! The old tell don't show, the classic sign of a good writer. You know, I'm actually glad that I didn't finish this because I think this comic would've turned out much more embarrassing than it already it is in its current form.
That's all I have to say about my old comics, I'm going to delete these now and make a new start. I just want to talk about these before I deleted them forever....
Until next time, later days!
