The Broken Hearts Gallery Review
11/18/2021
What's this? What's this? AN ACTUAL REVIEW?!?!, yes I'm actually reviewing stuff again! Congrats to Broken Hearts Gallery for being the first movie I review since my slump, I can only hope that Eastward will be the first game that I finish and share my thoughts on since my slump.
I remember seeing the trailer for Broken Hearts when I went to see Tenet with my brother last year, I honestly didn't pay the trailer much any mind, and I remember the "you aren't wearing any pants" joke really turn me off in the trailer, and I couldn't really give you a good reason why other than "OOPS, my asexuality jumped out" and I guess I wrongly mistook that ONE joke as a warning that this movie would be really raunchy (despite being targeted to a feminine audience), which again is MY fault for taking that joke in the wrong way, and I dont know why I was acting like such a prude at that moment when I find stuff like Rip Wii Shop Channel and Baby Got DLC funny, I don't know what I was on, it was 2020 and I was just in a mood I guess.
This movie caught my interest because one of my hyper fixations has decided that Dacre Montgomery is just the man of the year (or at least for the last 6 months), I do not choose the hyper fixations they choose me, I'm the Pikachu in this situation, not the trainer. It's weird when it picks a person, but I'll explain that in a whole 'nother post that's kind of compliment to this one, its an appreciation/gush post about him (but not gonna gush too much because my simp card can only take me so far, and he's a real person, so it's hard not to feel like creeper straight outta Minecraft-specifically the one from the creeper rap or the cute one from the MC dating sim, you feel me?). This interest in him is more an artistic muse type of vibe and not the BOOM BOOM I want you in my room if you know what I mean. Anyways, I was interested in seeing him act in a more down-to-earth comedic role since he's really talented with more serious dramatic roles, I just wanted to see what he be like...
One more thing before I moved on to the review:
(This review contains spoilers if you want to see a TL;DR of my thoughts skip to the overall thoughts section)
The Broken Hearts Gallery is about an art gallery curator, Lucy who after being tragically dumped by her boyfriend and losing her job all in the same night, gets into a car who she thinks is her rideshare driver but turns out to be a dude named Nick, whose renovating a YMCA into a hotel. Lucy has a habit of collecting items from her past loves and storing them in her room, to get over her most recent love loss and to help others with a broken heart she teams up with Nick to turn the hotel into a gallery that showcases items from others that love has left behind, Nick and Lucy not only help each other out with the hotel/gallery but with life stuff too and the two start getting closer and closer..
I find the story of this movie to be interesting and pretty unique, I really enjoy plotlines in both movies and tv where the characters have to collect items or trade items, since usually the items being traded or collected have some story or memory connected them, and I really like how even the weirdest and strangest items can hold the sweet or most heartbreaking story (same goes for simple items too). One of my favorite things about this movie is in between the story there are little interviews with some of the people who visit the gallery to drop items off, it really gives off a sweet cozy vibe to the movie and can give even the one-note characters some depth.
The movie itself has a very cozy atmosphere to it, I guess its because it's about personal items is what gives it the cozy feel (despite taking place new york). The movie is like a chocolate bar with cookie bites, in where it's overall very sweet but there are moments that linger and melt for a bit before moving on, those scenes are usually between characters like Lucy and Nick or Lucy and her friends/family. The cookie part I mention is that they are smaller moments are really short and sweet, some of them are like blink and you'll miss it but once you see it, it's like "aww".
The movie also has a very goofy tone to it, it doesn't take itself too seriously, there were some jokes that were "not funny didn't laugh" and some jokes need to go to horny jail, but they are out the weight by the jokes that actually hit and a lot of them do, but the movie does have serious moments but it's not a tonal shift and it's done very well. Some people in their movie review give the movie one star because they claim it was very political, even though it was I mean there was some political stuff mentioned but those parts only last like a sec and when a character was acting SJW-ish or man-shamy (as some put it) it was usually for a joke and not taken seriously like the politics didn't take over the movie at least for me. There was a very fun vibe to the movie too, like you could tell that everyone making this movie was having a good time and IT SHOWS, and it's very contagious, just about every scene felt like a good time
This movie kind of has ALOT of characters, but only gonna go over the main ones to keep things simple
Lucy - Lucy is probably one of my favorite characters in this movie, I was afraid that she would come off as the stereotypical selfish millennial, but she wasn't she was actually really kind, sensitive, and thoughtful. She cares a ton for others around her and tries to help the best that she can, she's also really funny too Geraldine Viswanathan has great comedic timing and delivery. The scenes with just Lucy by herself are comedic gold and she can banter with just about any and every character pretty well. She's also really pretty too, the outfits in this movie slap the ground but Lucy really wears her outfit well. Despite her character being somewhat anxious, she can make friends really quickly and she just seems like a fun person to be around. I think her collecting things quirk is very cute, and really shows how sentimental she is. Lucy is probably the only character of recent that's a good example of a quirky adult character without coming across as annoyingly childish, she's actually pretty mature and responsible for the most part especially when others depend on her, even when they're mean to her , I find that inspiring in a weird way
Amanda and Nadine- Lucy's best friends and roommates, again I thought Lucy's friends would fall under the stereotype of annoyingly overprotective friends, which they are really overprotective but in a comedic way rather than a co-dependent way. Amanda and Nadine are just as funny as Lucy herself, I really think the three of them could carry a whole tv show season by themselves, their chemistry as friends are really great and believable. They don't try to baby Lucy, they are really honest with her, and Lucy's honest with them. Amanda's character kind of reminds me a little bit of April (from Parks and Rec) and Jade (from Victorious ) the way that she just says what's on her mind, and is really boastful (but not in an annoying way), I just find it funny how loud and bombastic she is and how her boyfriend just quietly supports her until the end. Even when she dumps him at the end it comes across as more funny than harsh. Nadine is a more gentle friend and she seems to be a little bit more sophisticated since she is a model, but she has her own funny moments too and some of the best lines. Lucy's friends seem like friends who are actual friendship goals.
Jeff - Amanda's boyfriend who's quiet for most of the movie, but despite not saying much he's still pretty funny, I just like how his main way of communicating with the others is hand gestures, his silentness really pays off when...well I don't really want to spoil that part its just really really good and I loved his interview at the end.
Max- Max is Lucy's ex who cheats on her on the first big gallery night, at first it seems like Max's just a jerk who doesn't really care for Lucy, but it's later revealed that after dumping Lucy he couldn't get her off his mind, and it didn't help that her broken hearts gallery was really taken off and that she was basically still stalking him until she takes him back, Max hasn't really changed and just kind of sees her as a replacement for the woman he cheated on her with. Max said he didn't mean to hurt Lucy, Lucy understands and lets him down easy and they ends on a mutual note
Marcos- Nick's friend, and kind of wingman, he is the one who pushes Nick to go after Lucy at the end, much like Lucy's friends he's just as funny, caring and has really good banter and platonic chemistry with both Nick and Lucy, I would have really liked to see more scenes with just Marcos and Lucy just vibin' but you can only do some much in 120 minutes, I also really enjoy the interactions with him and his wife, how he wasn't like "ugh, MY WIFE!" or "Ah, MY WIFE!~" he was somewhere between and you could tell that he really loved her. He's a real good bro
The Broken Hearts- The broken Heart are what I called the peeps who donate their belongings, despite only having a few minutes to speak they end up being a very colorful cast of people that really brings heart to the movie and makes it feel more alive and connected. Some of the stories are sweet, some are funny, others are heartbreaking but they're all pretty rememberable.
Now for best for last...YA BOI!!
Nick- I remember seeing an interview with Dacre before the movie came out where he said he was nervous about playing a comedic role for the first time and if he was going to do good, and its like nah, brah. Superman does good, he did phenomenal, the ball was knocked right out of the park shot to space, banged on mars re-enter the stratosphere, and killed a man just like how he killed this part! DUDE took it to the penthouse and FREAKED IT! I have been hoping that he would play a snarky, sarcastic role and I got my way! He can play a straight man in a comedic role really well, the best comedy with Nick were the scenes where he was just reacting to the weirdness of the situation, the chemistry between Nick and Lucy was so believable and it didn't take long for them to catch a vibe, like in the second scene they had together the vibe was immediately there. Listening to Lucy and Nick banter and talk felt like listening to actual friends just hang out and felt so natural, his chillness works wonders with Lucy's hyper and overdramatic-ness. He works really well with his eyes like in the final scene where he's pouring his heart out to Lucy you can really see the "Will she? Wouldn't she? I hope she takes me back!" in his eyes. and Oh, I might get caught in 4k for saying this but, he looked really cute throughout this whole entire movie but that goes without saying but I said it anyways!
The cast overall was a WHOLE vibe, everyone seem like they were having a good time making this movie, it really shows in scenes like the birthday karaoke scene and the final dance scene.
OHH! okay, so there SO many scenes in this movie that I like but I'mma just pick 5, otherwise this post would be Ulysses long
The Ice Pack Scene
I call this scene the ice pack scene because this is the scene after Nick gets assaulted by a random woman on the street who thought he was harassing Lucy, He goes back to the old YMCA to get an ice pack Lucy follows because she feels bad for him and helps him by wrapping up his ice pack, while Nick makes Lucy a glass of whiskey to help her forget about her problems. I like this scene because it shows how they both help either and they continue to do so throughout the whole movie this scene is also the scene where the first vibe together and their banter is really cute.
The Ice Cream/Couch scene
Lucy and Nick go around town looking for cool stuff to put in the gallery, they find an old couch and just sit and hang for a second talking about their lives and eating ice cream. I like this scene because again quality banter and the way Nick laughs while Lucy goes on and on about how she'd like her bio to go is just really cute, and the way they both laugh, and mess around while looking for cool stuff is just some good fluff stuff! I think this is one of the scenes you can tell the actors were really having fun with it.
The Champagne Scene
This Champange scene doesn't have much to do with Nick or Lucy but one of the people who donate an item to the gallery, its one of my favorite parts I think it speaks for itself (F in the comments if the link is dead tho')
The Karaoke Scene
(The scene starts 2:44 secs in, RIP headphone users because there's a scream at the start of the clip)
I remember somone in the review says that they didn't like the Karaoke Scene because none of the characters could actually sing, but that's not the point of Karaoke, the point of Karaoke is to just goof off and have fun, which is what makes this scene really great! While neither of the leads sings really well in this scene you can tell that they're just having fun with it and its really cute to see.
The Piano Scene
In this scene, it's shown why Lucy likes to keep items that have her memories attached to them, her mother has trouble remembering even her own daughter's name and her own age. Lucy still makes an effort to visit her mother it really shows how much of a caring person she is and how much of a people person she is, and it's where Nick finally understands Lucy.
Hidden Bar
This scene takes place right after Nick and Lucy come from visiting Lucy's mom, Nick shows Lucy a hidden bar that he build, which looks SICK by the way, and its where they share their first kiss...
You're the Stupidest Princess
This is the scene after Nick and Lucy break up after Nick's ex comes to town, Nick is heartbroken but doesn't realize it (or want to admit it), Marcos tells Nick that Lucy was the one who help him get the mysterious loan to save the gallery, realizing this Nick rushes back to Lucy to tell her how he really feels...
LOVE HIM BACK!+ DANCE SCENE
In this scene, Nick rushes back to the gallery with a neon sign in tow, Lucy giving her speech at the gallery on the ball night but Nick interjects and pours his heart out telling her that he loves her, Lucy is not sure at first if she should take him back but Nick doesn't stand down and the crowd cheers for Lucy to "Love him back". Nick shows Lucy that he change the name of the hotel, which was originally named after his ex to the Broken Hearts Hotel the name Lucy came up with, seeing that he's for real she takes him back. What I really like about this scene is how everyone is dressed to the nine's while Nick is just in casual clothes, sweating. I was really expecting him to show up and show out both in a grand gesture and in fit but him looking so plain and simple makes it mean even more...
this movie must have taken a page from the Wario ware games because it ends in the best way possible a DANCE PARTY! (Which is best trope)
Nick Naks
This is during the credits, where Nick is showing off some of the items that hold memories of him and Lucy, I just like how giddy and dorky he is in this scene talking about her and how Lucy comes in and stops him. saying that he doesn't need to do this because they'll never break up. The banter is TOP NOTCH IN THIS SCENE, THIS IS S RANK BANTER
Was that 5? OOPs! guess I can't math right...oh well

Overall Thoughts/Tl;DR
Overall, This movie is a fun cute time, the acting is good, everyone's chemistry is on point, and it was mostly well-paced. This is a good comfort movie to watch if you feel down or just wanna see cute people do cute stuff. I really like how diverse the cast was in which makes sense for a movie about love, and loss two feelings anyone of any gender or orientation can relate to. I was going into the movie thinking that I would be at least happy with Dacre's performance (but he really did eat that) I really enjoyed seeing him play a snarky and dorky character, but I was pretty impressed with everyone's performance, the movie gave what was it was going to give along with more. I think people who already like the rom-com genre will really like this movie and people who like the dynamic of the lone wolf and the social butterfly as a couple or a relationship in general. This movie gives me vibes of a fluffy fanfic, which is the best vibe a rom-com could give in my terminally online opinion. Despite seeming contemporary, I think the movie may be timeless for some, and I'm really glad I gave it a second chance to watch (it was 12 bucks well spent on amazon, thank god I didn't accidentally get the Starz subscription like that one person in the reviews who gave it a one)
Personal Rating:
8/10
( Cute movie with cute people that makes for a cute time)
