Couple weeks ago I watched the Kim Possible movie, I almost forgot it was a thing because everyone was talking about it once it was announced and then again once the trailer dropped, but when the actual movie premiered it was pretty much radio silence on my end, it wasn't until one the youtubers I watched did a reaction to the movie 2 days after it premiered I was reminded of it's existence. I watched it because I had nothing else better to do (as usual) and I really liked watching Kim Possible as a kid and OH BOI...it was a mess! This movie was probably one of the most weirdest Dcoms (and trust,I'v seen just about all of them). This movie has really awful special effects, awkward action scene, underacting mixed with overacting, and all with a really ham fisted girl power message throughout the movie that doesn't want you to forget!
"This movie didn't feel like a Kim Possible movie at all" is what I thought when I first watched the movie, then I took a step back and thought maybe I was being too hard on it, at the point I had watched Kim Possible in a while and maybe it was actually more faithful than I was giving it credit for--No, no it's not I've re watched a good chunk of the old series and other than like most of the major sets this is not a good adaption (at least in my opinion). Re-watching this movie let me to find out why this movie is so weird and what stops it for being at least a cheesy tongue and cheek adaption that's so good it's bad but I'll save that for the end.(TL;DR at the bottom) Reminder that this is all my opinion and you don't have to agree, just be respectful and of course
(Tbh, it's not like this movie is a masterpiece or not painfully predicable)
The original Kim Possible was about a teen girl named Kim Possible trying to save the world while tackling the trial that is high school, despite being a pretty standard premise the show was actually pretty good, the characters were all well acted, memorable , and had good chemistry with each other, the comedy was witty and clever, and Kim was still a relateable character while being a strong female role model. If only I could say the same for this movie...
The movie starts out with Kim on a rescue mission to save some scientist that made some disintegrating goo, who was being held hostage by Professor Dementor (who is being played by his original VA, which was pretty cool). One of the many problems this movie has it's action scenes unlike the show the action scenes here are slow-pace, floaty and lack the punch (pun in intended) and it doesn't really help that the actress who plays Kim doesn't look like she could believably pull off any of these stuns.
So, Kim and Ron saves the goo scientist and escape the lab as it self-destruct and we're treated to some cgi explosion, which does a good job in showing the audience what special effects they're in for, in this movie (while most of the effects are bad I think the glitter goo is pretty-pretty but that could be because I just like glitter so much)
After that, we cut to Kim getting ready for school, in my personal opinion this Kim seems a little bit to excited to for the first day of school, her enthusiasm for the first day of school comes across as nerdy rather than prepared and I think it doesn't help the actress looks so young, had Kim been played by a older actress it would have read as more prepared than nerdy and excitable. Not saying the Kim in the old show was a bad or lazy student, she was a good student always made sure to have good grades and participated in extracurricular activities (of course since she was a cheerleader) but it was never to the point where she seemed this hyped. Kim's mom tries to remind her to not get so caught up in being the best at everything, Kim reassures her mom she's ready to take on high school because she's Kim Possible. Wade reminds Kim that the bus for school is arriving soon, and the writers think that this will be the best time for Kim to show off her" cool moves" (yes, I'm talking about the infamous BUS SCENE!")
(Yes, I did edit the footage, obvious. I had a stream running while filming this but this movie doesn't deserved any better)
This movie has a weird problem with showing Kim doing cool tricks and flips n' stuff when she's not on missions but at school which something Kim didn't do in the show unless someone was in actual danger or for cheer practice, and it's not even like the tricks Kim pulls off in the movie are well executed enough to get away with it. The movie cuts to Shego breaking out Drakken of jail, which the way the scene is shot it gives this new Drakken a more Joker vibe than old Drakken vibe (if that makes any sense). Kim arrives at school, and Ron is livestreaming their first day of school (for some reason). I know this movie is trying to be hip with the kids, but it would have been more accurate if Ron was just vlogging his first day of school instead of livestreaming it (beacause I have watched many of school vlogs, which is more common than livestreaming it). Kim gets taunted by Bonnie (Who's older than Kim in this version for some reason) and Kim asks when is cheer tryouts but Bonnie tells Kim that's cheer's for loser and soccer's is where it's at. Wade tells Kim that the school re-numbered the classrooms over the summer, which makes her late for her first class, its here where we meet this movie's Mr. Barkin, who is way less likable and amusing than the original.
The class ends and Kim tries to make it to her next class which is on the other side of the school, the movie takes time to show off more of Kim's tricks to seem cool but just comes across as needlessly showy.
Kim shows up late to class anyways to Mr. Barkin's frustration. Back with Drakken and Shego, Shego takes Drakken back to their new hideout which is a total downgrade from their old digs (tbh I feel like that there wasn't enough money in the budget to recreate the old lair in all of it's glory )
The in-universe reason is because the old lair blew up due to Kim foiling one of Drakken's evil plans, He comes to the conclusion that the reason why Kim is able to defeat so many evil-doers is because she has a certain spark within her and that he must come up with a plan to steal that spark. Back at school, Kim tries out for the soccer team and another flippy wippy action scene ensues...
Kim manages to swipe out the entire team only to get promoted to equipment handler because freshmen can't be the team. Drakken watches Kim's disappointment from his lair via security camera (because he has accesses to that somehow) and there's a scene that could have been funny/clever (probably would have been my favorite part of the movie tbh if the actor and actress playing Shego and Drakken weren't being so serious) about Drakken asking Shego if she got the speical stone he needs to steal Kim's spark and Shego saying that she got it online because who goes out anymore to get stuff, the stone she bought turns out to be a fake and Drakken orders her to get the real one from some lab.
Kim talks to Ron on her way to the equipment room about how bad her first day of school is going, Kim and Ron come across a crying girl who was having a even worst day than Kim was, dropping her papers all over the place and having the whole school laugh at her. Kim (being Kim) decides to help the crying girl the best way she knows how using her flippy wippy techniques of course!
Even though, Kim could have just picked up the paper (without crushing it) like a normal person, and it would have probably had the same effect (as the girl would have still been amazed) but no can't let the audience forget Kim's a hero. Anyways, Kim and Ron take the girl out to eat at their fave hangout Bueno Nacho (which is probably one of the only things that remains faithful to the original). The girl introduces herself as Athena, she's a big fan of Kim (she even cosplayed her for comic con) and then she starts to lament about how lonely she is and how she doesn't have any friends, Athena makes a bad dog joke and starts barking like a dog I guess to show how quirky she is...
When they get back to school, Athena is able to use her charm to get Kim and Ron out of trouble for being late. Later, Kim invites Athena over to her house, Athena starts geeking out over Kim's gadgets and gizmos and then they come across Kim's original outfit from the show and OH BOI....
Okay, lemme go into a little rant over on this scene because I really need to get this out of me system. "Wearing the same outfit all the time kind of felt cartoony, after a bit" I'mma going to have to Phoenix Right" OBJECTION!" that! As shown in the video I made we can see Kim WEAR THE SAME OUTFIT TO EACH MISSION! It's not like an everyday "I'm just an average girl going to school outfit" if it were this statement would be legit and wouldn't have made me mad, BUTTT-- it's an outfit specifically worn for MISSIONS. Like how Supergirl and Captain Marvel wear their superhero uniform or like how a doctor, police officer, fire fighter wear the same outfit to work so that way the people that they are saving know that they are in good hands. The only time a hero changes their outfit is either a.) The original outfit is destroyed beyond recreation and they have to get a new one b.) the hero levels up or gets an new technological upgrade that makes them more powerful than before or c.) (and this one's REAL simple ) the outfit don't fit no more (i.e The Incredibles ). I know one could argue it's a joke or a nod to the original series, but the joke isn't funny and this nod comes across as a little disrespectful, would have been better if Kim had said "Oh, that used to been my style but I kind of grew out of it, but this outfit still holds alot of good memories and it's kind of nostalgic, so I just keep it here just to look at it to remind me of where I came from or where I started." THERE! it's not funny but it's sweet and respectful to the OG. (Okay, mini rant over let's move on..)
A song comes on the radio and Kim and Athena break out into a impromptu dance party (like in every cliche teen movie, yayy). to be honest, I don't think Kim would be the type to break out into a dance party, Kim and Athena don't have enough chemistry in the movie to that makes them feel like real friends that would do this. At the very least, I could see Ron trying to encourage Kim to dance because she was feeling down about her first day of school sucking and he was trying to cheer her up, that would have been a sweet friendship moment for them but NOPE INSTEAD WE GET THIS....
Another flippy wippy scene happens with a soccer ball between Athena and Kim, Kim treats Athena to a makeover and she finally looks decent for once in this movie (which is good because I was getting tired of the sad stray puppy look she was trying to rock for sympathy points). Kim gets a distress call from Wade saying Shego is on her way to steal the power stone needed for Drakken's machine, Kim stop goes back to pick up Athena ( who is suspiciously dressed up in an outfit similar to Kim's), so she can come along the mission (despite not even knowing if she's psychical ready and they just became friends like yesterday but okay). They catch a ride with a famous singer named Poppy Blue (played by Kim's Original VA) and head to where Shego be...
(I have to admit that this moment is only one of the few cool ones in the movie, although
there's a weird goof where Athena claim to be a big fan of Poppy Blue, despite in the scene before
she didn't seem to know who she was before Kim introduced her the music playing on the radio)
On the mission, Athena seems to show up Kim by knowing where the the hidden lab was, knowing exactly what Drakken's plan was, and where the power stone thing was. We get more actions scenes (of course) all flippety wippety but this time with a stickety, Kim and Ron gets themselves trapped in a tank with eels, while Athena runs around with the power stone until she finally just fights Shego off with a stick.
Oh and Ron finally meets Rufus in this scene, he's lab experiment instead just a regular naked mole rat from the pet shop.
Rufus looks cute when he's not in direct light and the camera's not on him for too long, I thought he was pretty cute until I looked up some render pics...
(Rufus would have been cute if it wasn't for the weird human hands they gave him)
Due to Drakken having cameras everywhere Kim be, the footage of her being trapped and scared in the tank, while Athena takes down Shego gets leaked. The next day at school all the students mock Kim and praise Athena for her quick wit and bravery, even Mr.Barkin and Bonnie has taken a liking to her so much, with Bonnie so much as going out of her way to invite Athena onto the soccer team, despite being only a freshman.
Wanting to improve her stick fighting skills, Kim goes to her grandmother's to practice. During practice Kim has an emotional breakdown, her grandmother senses that Kim is jealous, even though Kim denies it, her grandmother tells her that she doesn't have to be the best at everything. Kim then asks if she's not the best at everything then is she still really Kim Possible.
When Kim returns to school, there's going to be an assembly to celebrate Athena being...herself, while things seemed to be looking up for Athena, Kim starts to struggle in school and with being seen as a competent hero by the public. Kim gets so frustrated, she tries to walk out of school before the assembly, but Ron comes to comfort Kim telling her he'll always be there for her, like how they'll always be there for Athena. Kim reluctantly agrees...
At the assembly Athena is awarded star student, star player on the soccer team, and homecoming queen (and king) but before she could accept any awards, Drakken and Shego bust in and try to kidnap Athena. Kim tries to fight back using not so flippy wippy attacks (but still lackluster), Kim tries to finish off the henchmen--I mean women by going all flippety wippety with a stickety (despite Athena offering to take them on) but she fails....
Everyone gets upset at Kim for failing to save Athena and ruining the assembly. Kim decides it's time to stop being jealous and feeling sorry for herself, she finally realizes just because she's not the best at something doesn't make her any less. She decides to go save Athena with the help of her mom and grandmother.
Kim sneaks into the lair, and finds Athena (and pays no attention to the fact that she's not tied up or in prison), it's then and there Athena reveals to Kim that she was actually a robot working together with Drakken and Shego the whole time!*LE GASP*
Their whole friendship was a lie and this moment was suppose to be as heartbreaking and shocking to Kim as it is to the audience but due to how poorly this was all done I feel nothing. Drakken explains that he made Athena so she could steal Kim spark from her (although it's never really explained well how Athena was able to do that, like was it through touch, did Athena grow strong everytime she showed up Kim--which was like only once--, did the more time Kim spent with Athena the stronger she grew--it's just never explained)
Drakken then explains that he'll now use the spark that's in Athena and transfer it to himself. Of course, this will destroy Athena in the process, just as things look bleak for our heroes---Rufus with the help of wade comes in to saves the day by riding a drone to hit the button that releases the trap that Kim and her family and friend are in. Another lackluster fight scene happens, and despite Kim and her family being free Drakken still manages to turn on the machine but luckily Kim uses her laser to power down the machine before Athena could get hurt. This cause to machine to have a side-effect that ages down Drakken to a mere child...
The power stone for the machine goes haywire and turns explosive, Drakken and Shego escape leaving Kim and the others. Athena quickly discovers that she can absorbed the power stone's energy even though that might destroy her in the process. Kim tells Athena that she doesn't have to do this, but Athena says if she doesn't everyone will perish. Again, this scene is suppose to be very heartfelt but due to the little time the audience had with Athena it means nothing...
It especially means nothing since in the very next scene Athena is shown not to have died, Kim and her family are able to patch her up with THE POWER OF CODING and turn her good for good. Kim and Athena start martial arts club at school, and all well that ends well---Oh, since Drakken's now a child he's going to go undercover to get back at Kim once and for all blah, blah, blah, weak sequel bait.
I think this section should be short because I feel like I've already expressed my problems with the characters in the story but here we go. Kim's character is obviously drastically different in than in the original, in the series she is confident, assertive, smart, kind, but could be competitive, arrogant and even bossy at times. Here's she is just like another female protag in any teen movie taking place at the start of high school. Personally, I feel like there weren't enough moments in this movie where it was just Kim just hanging out like the moments the show had. Like if the movie were to have started out near the end of eight grade or summer and we could have seen a montage of some Kim's other adventures or just moments where it was just her and Ron hanging out together it would have given us a better understanding of her character.
Kim:
Let me just get this out of the way first the actress playing Kim does not look like KP--I'm sorry but it's true. She's a bit too young to pull off Kim. Even though she does try her best, but it's just not convincing enough. Even the times she tries to do a cool move just look like a girl who just learned how to do a cartwheel, or a back flip for the first time. If KP were to be played by someone like Zendaya, I don't think anyone would complain as much
Kim would have been more sympathetic to the audience when she stumbling about through high school, it would have been better than the movie banking on the audience to feel sorry for KP just because she's the main character. The older Kim was able to keep her hero life and her high school life separate and that's what made her so cool and relateable, she never really showed off any of her hero skills when no one was endanger. It feels like here in the movie they want to constantly remind you that Kim is a hero, which ironically made it hard to believe since the action scene were very poorly done.
It feels like the movie wanted to nuff KP because maybe they thought the original KP was too perfect (even though there were many times in the show that revealed she wasn't ) but at the same time remind you that she's a strong female character. I think someone who had reviewed this movie on google reviews said it best "a socially awkward and almost radically hyperactive oddity that seems to have every teen drama problem in every other cliche movie. I don't know if this was attempting to make her relatable or something, but the only equivalent I can think of is if someone tried to take superman and make him into a gaming nerd with a slight lisp"
Ron:
Ron's character is pretty good out of all the characters I think he was pretty spot on, he had the right amount of energy for his character, while others complained about his voice, his actor is also a voice actor so I think that was just second nature for him in a way . He did have did weird tick where at times he look like he was squirting to see something or biting his lip and that was a little bit weird, and the fact the his hair was curly instead of straight kind of bothered me too. Other than that his performance was alright...
Drakken:
Drakken's character had a weird mixed, there were times where he gave off more of a joker vibe than Drakken vibe, but I think that was due to the actor not really going all out with his character like as if he was holding back some and taking the role a bit too seriously. It also didn't help that his voice was lower than Drakken's voice in the show but I feel like that couldn't be helped really and also I think the way his makeup was done gave him more a sinister aurora than a doofy villain...
Shego:
Shego's character kind of had the same problem as Drakken's character, while there were times where she was a total mood and probably one of my favorite characters there were other times were if she to be a bit more sassier then she would have nailed it like the in the scene with her ordering the power stone online instead of going out and getting it first. Having her be tan instead of just green was an odd choice, but her actress was probably the best looking one out of the whole cast..
Athena:
I didn't really like Athena's character in this movie, her character isn't even much of a character since she's a literal plot device. The way she was kind of shoehorned into the story, yet was probably the most important person in the story, being perfect at everything, having everyone love her, and having a well-known superhero come in when she's having a bad day at school and show her the time of her life feel super self-insert and fan fic-y (kind of remains me of that tik tok meme). Athena's character would have been better if she started out weaker than Kim and Kim actually used Athena to make herself look and feel better, but Athena was still feeding off Kim's spark becoming strong than her, while this was happening Athena and Kim start to bond and build a strong believable relationship, so by the end the audience is actually shocked that Athena was build to betray Kim. It would have also help if maybe If Athena wasn't so sure that she wanted to steal Kim's essences near the end, making her sacrifice actually mean something...
There's not much to say about the other characters, Bonnie's just your standard mean girl, Wade's character okay, even though he only had a short time on camera Professor Dementor's character performance had the right amount of goofy energy I wish the other characters had. Mr. Barkin character went to from a stern but likable former military teacher to one of those annoying teachers that's a stickler for the rules and gets on everybody's case that no one likes, Kim's dad and bothers were just existing in the background, and while Kim's mom and grandmother did play somewhat of a role in the end they didn't do much that Kim, Ron, or Wade could have done themselves plus they just ended up getting caught in a net so...
In hindsight this movie (despite being the way it is) had alot of things going for it, the sets (even though they looked like they made in unity) were pretty on point to the show, there was a lot of fan service bits in there, they redid the naked mole rat rap to promote the movie and most of all, the original creators were on board...so, why is this movie so...ehh. While doing some research on the movie, I finally came across the answer...
Yeah, there were trying to come at the movie with a more "PC" approach and that's what I think really hindered this movie from being a fun, cheesy, cartoony live action movie that it really was trying to be. I mean think about it makes sense, the reason why Kim couldn't be in cheer (even thought that perfectly explains a way why Kim is so flexable and nimble and why she can do those amazing flips, but you can't really do those types of flips in soccer) and why they changed Middleton high from being a football school to soccer school is because of something...something...something toxic masculinity..something something male gaze.
Inclusion is why a character like Shego went from being a pale green to a brown tan, (although funny enough they totally forgot about Monique, Kim's black female friend who was pretty cool and charismatic. I don't know why they didn't add her into the movie, because the inclusion of Athena but exclusion of Monique lead a lot of people to come the conclusion that Athena was a replacement for Monique even tho she wasn't) gender neutrality, the way they announced Athena to be homecoming queen (and king), another funny thing is they say gender neutrality even though the movie beats you over the head with the theme of girl power. Like the way Kim's mom and grandmother are shoehorned into the movie at the end despite not doing anything that Kim, Ron, or Wade could do without them. I mean they even hired a bunch of women on the set just for being women...
The PC approach also explains why characters like Mr. Barkin are so lackluster because a female character having a militant man as her teacher always barking orders is the definition of toxic masculinity. Even Bonnie 's character I feel like was affected in a way I feel like she could have been more mean girl like but women being catty to each other goes against the PC agenda can't have women being too mean to each other.
What I'm trying to say is that I don't blame the actors/actress nor the writers or the original creators on the team, they all did their best, but they were restricted by Divine wanting Kim to be like Wonder Woman, but thing is Kim isn't Wonder Woman, she's Kim Possible. Kim was already a strong female character because she could do girly stuff like cheerleading and still kick butt on mission, and she wasn't prefect she was still learning to be a responsible teen and navigate the jungle that is high school.
In conclusion, The live action Kim Possible movie has the right amount of element to be great or at least a fun watch, but due to awkward, slow, floaty action scenes, weird pacing within the story (where weeks feel like days), characters that either overacted a little bit compared to other characters that underact and take their role to serious, the movie trying to be both cartoony and down to earth but not having the ability to balance it correctly, and really bad cgi effects on the level of Spy Kids stops the movie from being either of those things. If you want a Kim Possible movie with a similar plot-line but done better just watch the So The Drama movie, and if you want to see a live action equivalent of Kim Possible watch K.C Undercover, it's no cigar but it's probably the closest thing you could get Disney wise.
